South Wales Police Authority works with our three colleague Authorities in Wales to work on behalf of the whole of Wales on some policing issues.
“The police service of Wales will work with our communities and partners to create a better, safer Wales, treating everyone with courtesy and respect.”
We do this through the Police Authorities of Wales, which is a representative body made up of the four Welsh Police Authorities – Dyfed Powys, Gwent, North Wales and South Wales.
Police Authorities of Wales (PAW)
The Police Authorities of Wales (PAW) was first established in 1996 as a way for Authority Members to meet and discuss issues that affect the whole of Wales. In 2007, this was developed into a constitutional body with delegated powers of responsibility.
All-Wales Deputy Chief Constable
In 2009, the four Police Authorities and Chief Constables in Wales appointed Deputy Chief Constable Andy Edwards as an All Wales Programme Director, who is responsible for the direction and control of all resources assigned to the Wales Central Service, and is accountable for the delivery of the National Policing Plan for Wales.
Awards
The collaboration work which is taking place in Wales is seen nationally as best practice, and the Police Authorities of Wales have won awards for their work, including the 2008 Association of Police Authorities Collaboration Award and the NPIA Outstanding Contribution to Governance and Accountability award at the 2009 Alumni Dinner.
