Gender Equality Scheme

Gender Equality Scheme

As an Authority we recognise the importance of gender equality - both in our role as an employer and as the guardians of a public service.

The Equality Act 2006 amends the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 and places a statutory duty on all public authorities to promote gender equality. This means that Police Authorities must, in carrying out their functions, have due regard to the need to:
  • Eliminate unlawful sex discrimination and harassment
  • Promote equality of opportunity between men and women.

This ‘general duty’ applies to all public authorities, including South Wales Police Authority. The duty applies in respect of all functions regarding employment and service delivery, including services and functions which are contracted out. The duty is aimed at improving equality for men, women and transgender people.
